Professional Freshwater Ecology Certification
Master field research techniques, ecosystem assessment, and conservation strategies through hands-on training with experienced freshwater ecologists
Building Real-World Expertise
Our certification program emerged from years of watching talented people struggle to break into freshwater ecology without practical field experience. Too many graduate programs focus on theory while employers desperately need professionals who can actually collect reliable data and interpret ecosystem health indicators.
We've structured this as a year-long journey that mirrors how you'll actually work in the field. You'll start with water chemistry fundamentals in controlled settings, then progress to complex stream assessments in different seasonal conditions. By month eight, you're leading your own research projects.
- Intensive field work across diverse freshwater habitats
- Laboratory analysis certification for water quality parameters
- Macroinvertebrate identification and biomonitoring protocols
- Fish population assessment and habitat evaluation
- Data analysis using current ecological software platforms
- Professional report writing and client communication
Two Specialized Tracks
Research & Assessment Track
Perfect for those aiming to work with environmental consulting firms, government agencies, or research institutions. Heavy emphasis on standardized monitoring protocols, statistical analysis, and regulatory compliance.
12 months intensiveConservation & Management Track
Designed for future watershed coordinators, conservation program managers, and restoration specialists. Focus on stakeholder engagement, project planning, and translating science into actionable conservation strategies.
14 months comprehensiveBoth tracks include the same core fieldwork foundation – the difference lies in your capstone project and specialized modules during the final semester. We've seen professionals successfully switch between tracks even mid-program as their career interests become clearer.
Learn From Active Practitioners
Our instructors aren't just academics – they're professionals who spend their days solving real freshwater challenges across different ecosystems and regulatory environments.
Dr. Kieran Blackwood
Senior Research Ecologist
Leads our fish population modules. Spent fifteen years with state fisheries before consulting. Has that rare ability to explain complex population dynamics through stories that actually stick.
Dr. Nora Castellano
Water Quality Specialist
Your go-to for chemistry and lab techniques. Currently works with three different consulting firms on stream restoration projects. Known for making even the driest protocols engaging.
Dr. Elena Varga
Ecosystem Assessment Expert
Handles our macroinvertebrate and biomonitoring sections. Active with EPA protocol development and has this knack for helping students see patterns in data that initially look like chaos.
Next Cohort Starts Fall 2025
We keep cohorts small – maximum 16 students – to ensure everyone gets adequate field mentoring and equipment access.
The application process includes a brief technical interview and a short field skills assessment – nothing intimidating, just helps us understand your background and tailor the program accordingly.
